What is cxt in a Twitter or X link?

What cxt looks like

A post link with it reads x.com/user/status/1234567890?cxt=HHwWgsC9…: a block of letters and digits that changes from link to link. X publishes no description of the parameter. The name suggests "context", meaning where the click came from, and that is an inference.

The value does not identify the post. The number after /status/ does.

The other parameters on an X link

A link copied from the X app usually carries s= and t=, the share tokens covered on the s parameter page. ref_src and ref_url appear on links from embedded posts. cxt is the one that tends to arrive through notifications. LinkClean removes all of them on X's domains.

How LinkClean removes it

Default-on, scoped to x.com and twitter.com. Three letters are too generic to strip everywhere, so on any other site cxt is left alone. AdGuard's filter, Brave and Firefox remove it on X as well.

Frequently asked

What does cxt mean on Twitter?

X has not said. It is an undocumented token, and the name suggests it records the context of the click.

Does the post still open without cxt?

Yes. The post id in the path is all the link needs.

Why is cxt only removed on X?

Because the name is short enough to be an ordinary key on other sites. LinkClean strips it only where it is known to be X's.
